Educate your child about Internet Safety Guidelines. www.wisenetizen.com

At what age is it acceptable to allow a child unsupervised internet use?

Internet Safety www.wisenetizen.com

I think this depends a lot on the child, her maturity and your ability to monitor or restrict their activity if you aren’t there at the time. It’s important to view online safety in the same way as we do any other personal safety issues such as road safety and that unsupervised internet access should only be allowed when children can demonstrate safe and responsible online behaviour.

Here communication is key. Open, realistic age-appropriate communication between parent and child. About what kind of websites are and aren’t okay. About what kind of behavior online is and is not okay. Restrict Internet access to a family room (not your child’s bedroom), where you can gently supervise. Be interested rather than restricting. Ask you child to show you what she’s doing, what she’s learning. Make this topic a discussion at your dinner table or a outing. Discuss any incidents that arise and help your child defend herself from the cybercrimes like bullying.
Parental supervision may change as children get older and can mange online risks better; however other systems (such as parental controls, education and communication) should also be in place.

Internet : Good or Bad

Internet

I am writing this blog post to answer a question which my nephew had asked me few days back, I am sure your child will ask you this question sooner or later and if not it is your responsibility to discuss this with your child. I have made the conversation interesting by telling you some facts and examples.

The question:

“What are advantage and disadvantages of Internet?”

The Answer:

The Internet has revolutionized the world. Along with it, The Internet has brought good and bad things. .

GOOD:

–      Connecting People:

People can connect and interact with others at low cost. We are “closer” to others because of this connectivity. Imagine if your close relative stays in some other country, you can see and talk to him using video chat like skype, yahoo messenger, and Gtalk.

You can also chat online with your friends and relatives. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter are available which help us to keep in touch with them. We can share information with each other through Emails.

Interesting Fact: Zachary Reidell has an email address 411 characters in length, his name is also included in Guinness world record.

–      Knowledge center:

The Internet is like the “knowledge” center of the world. We can find information on almost anything in a number of languages quickly and efficiently. We don’t need to visit a physical library anymore because everything is online.

Interesting Fact: One of the best search engines is currently is GOOGLE. Because of  popularity of the word, “Google” is also included dictionary http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/google

Google (verb): Search for information about (someone or something) on the Internet using the search engine Google

E-learning and distance education is a great method not only for children but also for adults.

–      Online Business, Online Shopping

The Internet has given rise to new businesses and new ways of earning money. Look at Ebay, Amazon, and all the other e-commerce websites. People can just work from home and make tons of money if they have the knowledge, ability and luck. Online stores and sites allow you to look, review and buy products. You do not need to leave your house and can do all your shopping from the convenience of your home.

Interesting Fact: The “best seller” product in shopping sites worldwide is Books. Check out these crazy facts about Amazon.com, one of most popular ecommerce website http://www.businessinsider.com/12-crazy-facts-about-amazon-2013-7?op=1

 –      Downloading data

This is one of the most happening and fun things to do via the Internet. You can download innumerable, games, music, videos, movies, and a host of other entertainment software from the Internet, most of which are free.

BAD

–      Virus threat & SpyWare
Virus a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computers attached to the internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing your whole hard disk. Spyware is software that keeps a watch on user’s Internet activities. This can include personal information entered such as credit card and banking numbers as well as website visits. The information is gathered and transmitted over the Internet to a receiving source. This happens without the user knowledge as it uses their computer’s resources for its own purpose.

Interesting Fact: A program named “Rother J” was the first computer virus to come into sight “in the wild” — that is, outside the single computer or lab where it was created.

–      Theft of Personal information
If you use the Internet, you may be facing grave danger as your personal information such as name, address, credit card number etc. can be accessed by other culprits to make your problems worse.

–      Spamming:
Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system. Such illegal activities can be very frustrating for you, and so instead of just ignoring it, you should make an effort to try and stop these activities so that using the Internet can become that much safer.

Interesting Fact: The first person arrested for spam was Anthony Greco, aged 18, on February 2005. He was accused of sending 1.5 million of unsolicited ads for porn and mortgages. He blackmailed MySpacee.com in order to get marketing contract with them. Anthony was invited for a meeting to discuss the contract terms, where he was arrested.

–      Addictive (shopping, gambling, pornography)

Ease of access can make you additive to various activity like shopping or pornography.

Examples: Top e-commerce websites are Amazon, Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.

–      Potential for limited communication skills

People have started using the internet on a regularly basis and are staying online for a longer period. This has led them ignoring outside world, hobbies and also meeting friends and family personally.

Examples: Top social networking websites are Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and Pinterest.

The Internet is a double-edged sword. If used wisely, it is a useful tool and as seniors, it is very important for us to educate children about safety.

Take Care 🙂
