The Internet has drastically changed the way that children interact with the world. They have easy access to in-depth knowledge, yet along with offering a fascinating, new way to connect with the world, the Internet also offers new risks. Check out this list:
- Cyberbullying – Netiquette refers to good manners on the internet and treating other people on the internet as you would like to be treated yourself. Children may not realize that they can accidentally offend someone online. Unfortunately, some people use the internet and/or mobile phones to upset or harass others. This is called “Cyberbullying”.
- Exposure to inappropriate material – Parents should be aware of children/adolescent’s exposure to inappropriate material—sexually explicit, violent, or threatening text, pictures, videos, or phone calls—through their mobile phones.
- Revealing too much personal information – Children can become an easy target for online predators. These people ask them about their personal information, such as home addresses and phone numbers, private thoughts and feelings, and pictures. Children are so innocent that they end up telling such personal information to strangers.
- Virus and Spam – Virus is a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computers attached to the internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing your whole hard disk. Spyware is software that keeps a watch on user’s Internet activities. This can include personal information entered such as credit card and banking numbers as well as website visits. The information is gathered and transmitted over the Internet to a receiving source. This happens without the user knowledge as it uses their computer’s resources for its own purpose.
Make sure that your child and family knows how to stay safe online and are wise netizens.
